2011 Peonies

Hey folks. This year we will once again be offering bare root peonies. We have many types potted for sale now, but many are only field planted and can be dug this fall, late Sept - early Oct. They can be ordered within the next month or more while they are blooming. Tour thru our peony patch and pick out your favorites. Most of them are pictured here, just click on 'older posts' at the bottom of the next 2 pages to see them all.

Spring Peonies

Spring potted peonies that we will have for sale. Prices are listed by each description. Most are large 2-3 gallon size, only Sara B. got chopped up smaller, into gallon size. My brother was here from Texas over the weekend, and asked "why are some more expensive than others?" Good question. Here's the answers:

they are likely more expensive when I buy them
they are likely newer on the market, so supply and demand
they may not be as productive, so less divisions per year
new colors or types always cost more, like corals in peonies
bigger plants in general cost more, as someone has cared for them a long time. For instance a 2-3 gallon size peony, has been under someones care for 2-3 yrs., verses 8 weeks for a petunia! And.... your peonies will likely out live you, now that's a bargain!

Pink Kisses (above) who can resist a name like that? Mid-season double, 26 " tall. Cost $16.00

Raspberry Charm (above) like Coral Charm in habit, with those nice sturdy stems, but a rich raspberry color, early bloom and 32 inches tall, semi-double. Cost $20.00

Viking Chief (above) 36 inches tall, semi double, mid-season bloomer. Cost $ 15.00

Check out these beauties we'll be selling potted this spring. We won't know till later in the season if we will have bareroot plants this fall.
Sarah Bernhardt (above) 34 inches, gorgeous pink blooms in mid-season, very fragrant. Cost $ 9 for a 1 gallon size.
Do Tell, (above) 32 inches tall, Japanese style with awesome multi-colored stamoides blooms mid-season. Cost $16.00

Coral Charm (above) 36 inches, early bloomer. These semi-double blooms were loved by everyone. More 'coral' color in person, strong sturdy stems. That is my normal sized hand to the left, the blooms are humongous! Cost $20.00

Brides Dream (above) an awesome white, Jap style with cool upright stamenoides, 26-28 inches tall, blooming mid season. Cost $15.00

PEONIES for 2010

We plan to be selling potted peonies this spring that we will be receiving in March. We moved the entire 'patch' last fall and added about 24 new varieties. Depends on how they recover whether or not we will be doing any bareroot plants this fall. The plants will indicate to us w/their bloom and plant size this spring if they are ready or not!

We are currently re-planting all the peonies. We have moved the patch, and will have double the varieties from last year. Put it on your calendar for next spring, late May - June to stop by and see them in bloom. We also plan to sell potted peonies next spring.

Range from $10-20, most of them around $14. They are a large root section, most of them have 5-10 eyes (growing points)

The Dig is Done!

It sure was easier than I thought. I guess because we have a pointy plant bucket digger (now doesn't that sound technical) on our bobcat. This is our first time digging these so wasn't sure what to expect. Their root systems like most plants, differed from variety to variety. Some came apart nicely, some were a wrestling match. Big long carrot like roots that are very fragile. Amazing how BIG they got in just a few years.

Peonies

We are no longer accepting orders, but we will have these 36 (3 others are sold out) varieties for sale. We plan to start diggin Sept. 14, Frank has taken that week off. We will be selling them from the field and at the Mankato's Farmer Market on Saturdays. Look for them starting Sat. Sept. 19th at the MFM. We only have one set-up with the peonies. They will be at the MFM on Saturdays, at at the field Tues.-Fri. Peonies sales will end Oct. 3rd at the MFM. The amount available for each will differ from 1 to 20 plus of each variety. If you already ordered peonies, you will need to pick up as soon as we call you.....well at least within a few days. That is our last big item to sell, then we will be closing for the season and traveling.

Coral Charm sold out for 09, but Coral Supreme is available. They are so similar in appearance, I cannot tell a difference. I prefer the scent of Coral Supreme, otherwise their twins! The color is very vibrant when opening then softens. These were by far the most favorite. The bouquets with these always sold first.

Raspberry Charm, 32" early, Semi-double. This peony is called th raspberry colored Coral Supreme. Very similar in all ways, strong stems, early bloom, huge flowers, just in this awesome raspberry color!

'SARAH BERNHARDT' 34" mid season bloomer. This one is just starting to open, very wow.

Mildy fragrant, large blossoms of rose pink, edge a little lighter, some red flecking on central petals. It was introduced in 1906!

"MR. ED" (above) 28" early bloomers. Color is well... pinks and blushes. In this case I had one 1/2 & 1/2. Now I am not sure whether Mr. Ed was named after the talking horse, which was also unusual, so maybe....... Some flowers were white, some pink and some blended on the same plants! Large fragrant flowers atop strong stems. Vigorous growth.

"CORAL SUPREME" 36" early season bloomer. Gorgeous semi-double w/beautiful salmon-coral blossoms atop vigorous stems. They start out much more vibrant, then color mellows like that in the photo. So Awesome, everyone loved these!

Reminiscent of scoops of vanilla ice cream covered with raspberry topping dripping through the petals. Distinctive form and color. Sweetly fragrant.
